In general, the Fairmont Orchid was absolutely beautiful. The lagoon was amazing for swimming and snorkeling, and the outside restaurants created an awesome evening dining experience. However, there were a few things that detracted from the experience: 1). Like mentioned in other reviews, they charge for EVERYTHING and they charge alot - $45 for an hour of snorkeling? $60 for some chicken skewers and a couple drinks? I recommend the Deli for some reasonably priced meal options. You can also buy a pretty good snorkel set from Walmart in either Kona or Hilo for about $45. 2). The rooms were ok, but the walls were a bit thin and the beds were not as nice as you would expect for a resort of this price. Our frig was broken, but they were nice enough to promptly bring us another working unit. 3). The concierge was mysteriously misinformed about many things, including the closing time of the various restaurants on the grounds. Be careful when relying on being able to eat dinner at night without checking the closing time with the restaurant. Some of the amazing highlights: - 24 hour pool and 2 hot tubs.. these were awesome and usually the hot tubs were empty in the evening - The Lagoon had awesome swimming and snorkeling - The grounds were beautiful and well maintained - The nearby petroglyph park was interesting and well worth visiting Overall, I would recommend the Fairmont Orchid to anyone looking for an upscale resort experience as long as one acknowledges that there will be extra charges.
