We had a deluxe ocean view room on the 5th floor that overlooked the pool, ocean, and lagoon beach. The grounds are truly lovely, with winding paths meandering through gardens and waterfalls. Although there were many children on the property, the pool never felt crowded due to its size. The employees were consistently helpful, relaxed, and cheerful. We ate at the casual beach-bar restaurant on the property, and while not cheap, the prices were not outrageous. We also took advantage of the Foodland Farms market about 1 mile down the road, and ate breakfasts of fresh fruit and yogurt on our balcony. There is a nice shopping center (Queens Shops) a couple of miles further down the road that has another "gourmet" market with fresh deli items, salads, sandwiches, etc., as well as a diverse food court and a Macaroni Grill. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were great. We would return in a heartbeat.

The lagoon was amazing for swimming and snorkeling, and the outside restaurants created an awesome evening dining experience. However, there were a few things that detracted from the experience: 1). Like mentioned in other reviews, they charge for EVERYTHING and they charge alot - $45 for an hour of snorkeling? $60 for some chicken skewers and a couple drinks? I recommend the Deli for some reasonably priced meal options. You can also buy a pretty good snorkel set from Walmart in either Kona or Hilo for about $45. 2). The rooms were ok, but the walls were a bit thin and the beds were not as nice as you would expect for a resort of this price. Our frig was broken, but they were nice enough to promptly bring us another working unit. 3). The concierge was mysteriously misinformed about many things, including the closing time of the various restaurants on the grounds. Be careful when relying on being able to eat dinner at night without checking the closing time with the restaurant. Some of the amazing highlights: - 24 hour pool and 2 hot tubs.. these were awesome and usually the hot tubs were empty in the evening - The Lagoon had awesome swimming and snorkeling - The grounds were beautiful and well maintained - The nearby petroglyph park was interesting and well worth visiting Overall, I would recommend the Fairmont Orchid to anyone looking for an upscale resort experience as long as one acknowledges that there will be extra charges.
