Resort Fees at Hawaii Hotels

Growing in Popularity Despite the Outrage of Many Guests

Despite the growing number of Hawaii hotels that charge mandatory resort fees,
many still do not.
Click here for a list of Hawaii hotels that charge NO resort fee.
Why do hotels have resort fees? Our 2018 Study of Resort Fees at Hawaii Hotels can give you a clue: the study shows that Hawaii Hotels will pull in nearly $400 million in 2018 in resort fees, revenue they didn't have just a few years ago when few hotels had these additional, manadatory fees.

What do you get for paying a resort fee? Things like in-room coffee, luggage storage, wake-up call service, in-room safe, pool towels, wifi service, newspaper, free domestic phone calls, use of the fitness center, etc. As you can see from the table below, you're often paying for things you don't need or used to be included in nearly every hotel stay. In a society in which nearly everyone carries an always-available internet-connected device, even the values of "free domestic and local calls" and "wireless Internet" are dubious.

We, at Travel Hawaii, are not fans of resort fees and wish hotels would include their amenities as part of the Aloha spirit of Hawaii accommodations.

There's a variety of alternate names for "resort fee" that Hawaii hotels have created, including "amenity fee", "facility fee", "utility fee", "boutique fee", "convenience fee", and "hospitality fee". How can an additional fee of this sort be "convenient" or "hospitable"?

On our hotel rate pages, we highlight hotels that do not have resort fees by following each of their rates with an item that says: "Includes: No Resort Fee" . In addition, if a hotel DOES have a resort fee, the resort fee and what it provides are explained in detail in red at the bottom of the rate table.

Currently there are well over 100 Hawaii hotels that charge mandatory daily resort fees. The hotels add these fees to your bill at checkout so it can be a big surprise to find you owe a significant amount at the end of your stay even if you've prepaid your hotel or haven't charged anything extra to your room.

We offer the following compendium of Hawaii hotels that charge resort fees: how much they charge, and what you get in return. We do our best to keep this list updated, even as more and more Hawaii hotels are adding such fees, and as many of those that have had resort fees for awhile keep raising the rate.

Take a look and see if you think resort fees add value to your stay in Hawaii.

My wife and I have been coming to Honolulu every year since 1996 up until a few years ago. We have missed the last few years due to having a baby that could not travel. We were going to book for next year but now will not be due to the RESORT FEE'S Great job whoever came up with this scheme but we wont be coming back.

I think Resort fees are a rip off...

I no longer stay at hotels in Hawaii. I use Air BNB . No resort fees. Hotels are pricing themselves out of business.

We have been looking to spend 4 weeks on waikiki beach but being 85 and 73 we refuse to pay the high prices plus resort fees. We don't mind the room rates but the resort fees are a rip off. Especially at our age when we will not be using anything. Hawaii has lost us.

Why not just put the fee into the price when booking ? You get hotels that claim it does say it on their website, but if you book thru a third party, like a Travel website, how are you supposed to know ? I live in Australia and this would NOT be allowed

I have gone to Hawaii several times in the past, but not since charging a resort fee. I will continue to vacation elsewhere until the fee is gone, or maybe I will airbnb it instead if I cant stay away any longer. Nonetheless, the hotels will not get my business.

We have been twice, as special occasions, so to travel half way around the world to have to pay resort fees is a no brainer, we will certainly not go there again, we will stay on some other tropical island where resort fees haven't been invented. Shame on you Hawaii, you will price yourselves out of business, unless you up your Aloha Spirit

I visited Hawaii several years ago and thought that it was time for a return visit but while looking for hotels I discovered the "resort fees". I totally agree with what everybody else has posted, what a rip-off, hidden charges for what is included in the price of "honest" hotels. Hawaii will have to get by without my custom.

Thanks for the list! Was in midst of booking another trip from Australia, discovered that every hotel I wanted to book now charge an additional (illegal?) rip off called a "last resort fee". May well it be as a last resort; you have lost this family visiting for ever! Europe (and without compulsory tipping) is going to be the benefactor of our hard earned money from now on!

I think resort fees are deceitful. Just charge the amount you want to charge and offer the services you're prepared to offer. Then let the customers decide if it's worth $10 extra at one hotel or another for free wifi or buffet breakfast or DVDs available for hire. aL

I was looking into hotel options and I found many hotels didnt offer free in-room wifi service and was really baffled by this. I read reviews on hotels and visitors never mentioned additional cost for in-room wifi. Then I read that it was USD$50 per day to have house-keeping service! I was like WTF ! So I started to goggle additional ammenties fees and "Resort Fees" came up in the google search and thats how I found this website. I am sooo annoyed that there are compulsory resort fee, this is the first time I heard of it and its freaking ridiculous. and on top of that you have to pay USD$25 per day for onsite parking in the hotel. Looks like you just have to pay for everything. I mean its not even that cheap to stay in a super basic hotel room. I think my trip to Hawaii will be my first and last.

If the room charge was a bit cheaper I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for the facilities. But since the resorts on Hawaii have exorbitant and outrageous rates it really is rorted to have a "Resort Fee" as well as a Cleaning Fee on departure. The room Rates are expensive. I wish there was a list of Resorts/Hotels that didn't charge resort fees and extra cleaning fees, it would make it a lot easier to find a decent hotel/resort at a reasonable price.

I hope no one in these hotels expect a tip for anything...

I consider any tips to be included in these resort fees. This also goes for the exorbitant parking fees. As far as I'm concerned the employees can go to the front desk to get their tips.

Beyond resort fee there is the 14% hotel tax for your stay in Hawaii. Considering the expense, traffic congestion, lack of aloha spirit replaced by greed of accommodation industry Hawaii not a desirable destination. After two trips in last four years no longer interested in Hawaii vacation.

Staying at Marriott Waikiki in November. I booked on the phone with Marriott. Was given a price but NOT told about daily $30 resort fee. Just found this site. Will try to change to hotel with no fee but if too late will be sure to ask in the future. AND if 2 people are in room what good is One free mai tai, or one certificate for discount on paddle board lesson. I'd rather at least have a water. VERY BAD BUSINESS and not Aloha Spirit. At least be up front and not hide the cost.

We use to go to Honolulu every year. We haven't gone in the last 3 years because of the resort fees. I intend to boycott travel to anywhere that I have to pay resort fees.

There shouldn't be any extra fee's on hotel stays. Paying a couple hundred bucks a night for a bed to sleep in? Amenities should be included in your stay! First smoking rooms being taken away (balcony smoking should be allowed) and now these fee's! Welcome to Hawaii....what's next? You will eventually send your visitors elsewhere!

Staying 6 nights in Hawaii in Oct. Staying at Hilton Waikiki Beach because of no resort fee. Would have considered other hotels(SPG/Marriott) but did not because of resort fee. Have status with all major hotel chains. Going to Asis, next year for 3 weeks and will stay only in hotels not having a resort fee.

My first resort fee was at a Wyndham in Miami beach. Get this, partly to use the pool. Really, pools were never part of the amenities at a hotel? I said we'll use the beach then. They wouldn't remove it. Now it's common. Most of the items on the list are things guests probably won't need. Calls- cell phones! Internet-I'm on vacation, no thanks. Bottled water-Cheaper elsewhere! Resort fees=ripoff.

I would not stay in a hotel that has a resort fee. I recently chose the Hilton Waikiki becasue it did not have a resort fee and provided all the facilities listed under Resort fees. Resort fees are simply a tax dodge and an effort to make rooms appear more competitive.

This is Simple uncompassionate, inconsiderate, callous form of GREED directed towards our fellow man. These businesses have lost their souls by being indifferent to the mostly conjured up extra mandatory cost they are inflicting on their "guests"? More like "helpless captives" of theirs and these businesses should lose our Patronship to them. They are being Bullies, and Bullies always have to be stood up to, or they will not stop. What else will they think of next to bilk us out of our money for their own selfishness?

The resort fees are nothing more than a cash grab and it all started in Vegas. I will stay in a hostel or the YMCA before I will ever ever pay this fee. I don't need free wifi when its already free on the streets and I certainly don't need a local newspaper. Some of these places that have the audacity to charge have tiny pools with no sun and located next to a smelly dumpster IE: Aqua Wave Resort.

Total scam. I avoid hotels that include hotel fees because I think their basic attitude on business is simply wrong and 'looking for rip-off' . Somebody should start a group to sue them. I wish I could but I'm not an American. Dayum

We too have enjoyed many visits to Hawaii, our favourite destination. However, we may not visit again due to this fee, we got stung last year. I guess the Hotels have decided that if you have less guests, there are less running costs and in the short term more profit. Aloha

We are seasoned travelers and have stayed in some of the nicest Marriott's/ Hyatt's in the world - We are planning a 20th anniversary to Hawaii but these growing so called resort fees just SUCKS and we found smaller chains are more than happy to make your stay very comfortable BOYCOTT THE BIGGER HOTELS THAT CHARGE these fees. just tell the smaller hotel why you are using them and not the large hotels that charge these fees. I am sure we can find somewhere that we can stay that won't rape us on cost in outrageous so called resort fees . FYI after looking to book the Marriott in Hawaii , I found that the Fees and Taxes alone for a nine day stay were around $700. OUCH!!! Dear Marriott I am thinking of hanging up my Gold membership due to your increasing rate/ awards and fee increases after 20 years -Put that in your pipe and smoke it

I was shocked to see the resort fee while booking my current trip from Australia. Also found they have spread to Las Vegas as well. Adding a fee to cover stuff you don't use or amenities that you would expect (pool towels for heavens sake) is price gouging at its worst. They are also adding additional "cleaning fees" on top of the resort fees at some places, awful. Have booked now but they are going to work very hard to earn their fees and when I check out these places are going to get a massive rant on what I think of them blatantly ripping me off.

Actually, from a legal standpoint, this sounds like a violation of the United States Deceptive Trades Practices Act. And last time I looked, Hawaii was still a part of the United States. What people who are forced to pay these undisclosed additional fees ought to do, is file a class action suit with the US Attorney General's office. That will put a stop to this nonsense right away! In France, you'll pay an additional 15% "pour service" at even a hole-in-the-wall eatery.....and then they expect a tip of 20% on top of that! Sounds like the "rip-off" trends have drifted North from French Polynesia!

In Australia its illegal to advertise prices that are exclusive of all taxes, fees and charges. The reasons are obvious. The so called resort fee is mandatory, and since it relates to use of the hotel and its facilities, it is clearly an integral part of the room rate and should be added to it up front so that customers can compare fairly. I did not notice it while booking but notice about it appeared only on my booking receipt. I guess the US equivalent of our ACCC Is asleep at the wheel.

As an industry professional and a travel agent - I can assure this is just a way for the hotels to increase their revenue! The 'resort fee' is nothing else but complete bullsh*t. My question is, when no one is occupying the room, does the hotel wear a loss each day to cover the said 'resort fee' per room? .... I fail to think so. . I love Hawaii, but there's no need to gouge the tourists.

It is quite simple. If an extra charge is optional, it is a fee. If an extra charge is mandatory, it is a lie. The only purpose of this is to deceive people into thinking a night's stay is cheaper than what it really is, which is to say a premeditated effort to defraud via false advertising. And the State of Hawaii sits idly by and watches as the dishonesty erodes the state's reputation. The problem is that hotels, beginning with the Westin Maui in the 1990's, correctly assume that the majority of travelers are ignorant and/or indifferent to their shenanigans and so you now have the absurdity of places like the Andaz Maui and the Kea Lani charging room rates of $500+ and still sneaking resort fees onto the bill...but only at the last possible moment, of course. And now even Outrigger, the last bastion of resort honesty in the Islands, is going over to the Dark Side on 15 October. When I make my already booked trip early next year, it will be the 33rd consecutive year I have visited Hawaii; however, if the state does not start legislating honesty (It is, I fear, too late to expect the ethically challenged hoteliers to see the light, the lemmings that they are...), that Era will end on 8 February 2016. What a sad day that will be...

We have been bringing our workshop to Maui for the past six years, but this will be the last. When hotel room rates are listed without revealing the resort fees it is a deceptive scam. We not only do not appreciate being ripped off, but don't want to have anything to do with those of that mindset. Their greed will not increase revenues in the end. We will no longer hold our meetings in Hawaii. There is a world of other options out there, with tropical beaches and atractive fee structures.

Wow! as an travel industry colleague this has taken hidden fees and charges to a new level.....paying for so called 'resort fees' in a resort is one thing but the vast majority of these hotels are just that, hotels. for many years I have enjoyed Hawaiian hospitality and this made HNL a family favourite. Alas that pleasure has now gone through out and out greed. I was in HNL recently and refused point blank to pay for inclusions that were always included, plus the rates have skyrocketed in recent years so when I asked on what basis the property was a resort (ocean waves lapping at my feet? no, we were 3 blocks from the beach! And what about the waiter bringing me fancy cocktails with little umbrellas? Nope none of that either!) they were speechless. So I wasn't charged 'on this occasion' and urge others to protest, loudly, at this insidious grab for money.

Hawaii! Forget your saturation advertising downunder, you forgot to mention the resort rip-off charge. Just got slugged USD1,036 for fortnight's holiday. Talk about robbing tourists. We've just kissed Hawaii as our favourite holiday destination after 35 years due to this rip-off. Coming from Australia, we don't have a car, 1800 phone calls are free anyway, don't want a 'family painting', nor cultural activities (we can organise ourselves), pool towels (can use the room ones), bottled water in our room (isn't Hawaii's water safe to drink?), internet access of any speed (can use our iPhones), an iron & ironing board (what does the room rate include?)... next we'll be travelling with our own bed linen! The Royal Hawaiian Hotel can't understand English (it's America, isn't it?). On its website it says Resort Charge "EXclusions" when it is an "INclusion" - deceptive advertising - there are no EXclusions, it's mandatory so there. Goodbye Hawaii, beaut holidays but no more. Back to Aussie Gold Coast and Fiji.

I've stayed at highish-end hotels in Hawaii for years, and this resort-fee business started a few years ago. Sad to say, it is probably here to stay. Of course it is a scam, since it is mandatory whether a guest uses the pool or gym or not. This is common in Vegas, where almost all the high-end places charges $20-$25/night for "resort fees". Since that is the routine, one either decides to stay at a nice hotel there, or not. Eventually, they will charge even higher fees while advertising lower base prices. Hawaii is just copying the same model. As someone already mentioned, this practice very efficiently shelters part of the hotel price from the likes of Orbitz, Hotwire, and the like. In terms of hospitality commercialization, Hawaii is already very much like Vegas, so I am not surprised it is following along.

I LOVE HAWAII but these fees are unfair especially if you don't use all they say is included in the fee.

There are 2 reason hotels put part of their nightly cost as resort fees. 1. Resort fees make their hotel looks cheaper online when you rank searches by price it comes up higher in the search. 2. They don't pay travel agents a commission on resort fees and if it was a higher rate they would have to pay the people who actually do the work selling their property more. They are helping to put your local travel agent out of business.

Resort fees are a scam. There have been class action lawsuits on this issue and it's about time a plaintiffs firm takes on Starwood and the other resorts who want to stick clients with the fees. It's all about declining revenues because in this economy guests are spending less. If the resorts raise room rates per night, they risk lowering occupancies so they charge the resort fee instead because it's psychologically easier on the guests. I won't stay in a hotel with a resort fee. It's just a game for me to find the best priced resort without paying an extra charge. Furthermore, I'm already in the top tier of Starwood and Hyatt's frequent stay programs so I don't need the additional check-ins that I lose by boycotting their hotels if they charge the fee. It's a rip off.

I think its terrible to have a mandatory fee. Why not include as part of hotel stay? Feels like you are trying to trick tourists. What's new? Stayed at marriott wailea. If you valet, they charge you 25 resort fee and 25 for parking..that's crazy. Feel cheated!!
On Jul 28, 2009 at 11:06A K T said
What you do not include in this list is whether these resort fees are PER ROOM or PER PERSON. Often they are per person, which leads to even greater checkout sticker shock. These services that you get for the resort fee are are things the hotel provides anyway, and they just list them as being what the fee covers in a lame attempt to justify the fee. If the fees are mandatory, any sane person would just say they should be included in the room rate, but the hotels just want to make their rates look lower than they really are.
